Nazif opens renovation project of Ibn Tulun mosque

Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif on Monday night opened the Ibn Tulun Mosque together with Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni following a four-year long renovation project at a cost of LE 12 million.

Nazif termed the restoration of the mosque, originally built in 853 AD, as a great step in maintaining Egypt's heritage.

Ibn Tulun's era was regarded as the golden age of Islamic architecture.

Ahmed Ibn Tulun, of Turkish descent, was one of the key figures in the Islamic history of Egypt.

He abolished the rule of the Caliphates and achieved Egypt's independence.

He began the construction of the mosque in 851 AD. It took two years to complete.

The mosque was renovated first in 1058.

In 1284 a new dome was constructed in the middle of the mosque, in addition to a uniquely-designed minaret and a wooden pulpit, the most beautiful of all Cairo mosques.
