Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities on Thursday asked the UNESCO to support and supervise work to restore the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque and condemn the Israeli aggression on it.
It said it is the duty of the international organization to do so as the mosque lies inside Al-Aqsa (Jerusalem) which is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
It said the UNESCO's World Heritage Committee that recently inspected the sites of Israeli excavations at the Mosque should write a report to denounce the Israeli violations.
Chairman of the Central Department of Egyptian Antiquities Mohamed Abdul Maqsoud said that the UNESCO as a neutral international body should make a realistic and objective report to reveal to the world all transgressions committed by the Israeli authority.
He said the council's Secretary General, Zahi Hawas, will preside over a meeting of the heads of the Arab antiquities at the UNESCO, and Arab and Islamic organizations to discuss the Israeli aggression on the holy site and the danger it is facing because of Israeli attempts to Judaize the ancient city.
