Irrigation Minister: Toshka's swales natural extension of Naser Lake

Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Dr. Mahmoud Abu-Zeid said Saturday 10/5/2008 that the most recent studies of the authorities affiliated to the Ministry concerning the High Dam, Naser Lake and mud noting that the volume of the precipitated mud in the Lake till January, 2007 hit 5.73 billion m3 from which 80% are inside the Sudanese borders and 20% inside the Egyptian borders.

The minister added that the lost storage volume of the High Dam till now hit 2.9% and its supposed age wobbles from 1200 to 1400 years while only 40 years passed on the High Dam operation. This means that the High Dam's condition is good as the minister confirmed, adding that the High Dam's safety tops the Egyptian water policy.

Abu-Zeid clarified that the lakes formed in Toshka's swales as a result of transforming the floods' water in the years from 1996 to 2002 are natural extension of Naser Lake.

He added that Toshka's swales are one of the defense lines of the High Dam to protect Egypt from the danger of floods. So, these lakes are not a result of an old geological river in the area.
