New Egyptian strategy for optimal use of renewable energy

Egypt is adopting a long-term new strategy for the optimal use of renewable energy, said Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Energy Hassan Younis. In press statements, he noted that this strategy is based on harnessing the great Egyptian potentials in this domain which are specified through a wind Atlas. The Atlas indicated that there are massive wind potentials in the Red Sea and Mediterranean regions, he added.

The electricity sector in Egypt has outlined a program for producing 7,500 megawatt of this energy before the year 2020, he added, noting that the ministry has also set out a plan for adding 600 megawatt annually to the general power grid.

Currant available wind power capacity in Egypt stands at 310 megawatt, he said adding that 240 megawatt are planned to be added to the current capacity.

Germany and the European Bank have approved extending 270 million euros to finance a project for setting up a giant wind power station at a capacity of 200 megawatt in Zafarana region, eastern Egypt. Also, Japan has approved to extend to Egypt 450-million-dollar soft loan to finance setting up a power plant at a capacity of 220 megawatt.
