Intensified Egyptian efforts to achieve stability in Lebanon

Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit entrusted on Wednesday14/5/2008 Egyptian ambassador in Beirut Ahmed el-Bedeiwi with holding intensive contacts with all Lebanese parties as part of Egypt's efforts to render the mission of the Arab ministerial delegation that arrived in Beirut today a success.

The spokesman for the Foreign Ministry said reaching a solution to the Lebanese crisis must take into consideration a balance among all Lebanese political powers to maintain the interests of all parties.

The Lebanese people are in need of political stability and security to go ahead with their march toward development, said the Egyptian spokesman.

He said that Egypt would continue efforts to achieve stability in Lebanon in cooperation with all parties concerned.

The foreign minister has been busy with Arab and foreign counterparts in a bid to come out with a unified stance supportive of an Arab action that will hopefully end the tension in Lebanon, the Spokesman added.

Meanwhile, Abul-Gheit telephoned Russia's Sergey Lavrov and the two exchanged views on recent incidents in Lebanon, the spokesman for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said.

Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Moratinos also talked with Abul-Gheit during his stop in Cairo Tuesday. Both agreed that violence has failed to achieve political goals in Lebanon and rather opened the door to endless fighting.

The spokesman underscored Egypt's keenness on reaching a settlement to the political crisis in Lebanon based on the Arab initiative.
