Became President of the Republic on October 14, 1981.

Joined the Military Academy on November 1, 1947 and graduated on February 1, 1948. After that he joined the Air Force Academy and graduated on March 13, 1950.

He advanced through different ranks of the Air Force, then he was appointed the Director of the Air Force Academy on November 2, 1967. On June 22, 1969, he was appointed Chief of General Staff of the Air Force. Four years later, on April 24, 1972, he became Commander of the Air Forces.

He led the Air Force during October 1973 War.

He was appointed Deputy to the President of the Republic twice: on April 16, 1975 and in October 1976.

During his reign all the Egyptian lands were liberated in continuation of the implementation of the Egyptian-Israeli peace agreement.

Three five-years plans for comprehensive development were implemented in Egypt during his reign.

He was re-elected for presidency for three times in 1987, 1993 and 1999 with a wide popular support .
