The National Democratic Party convenes its ninth general congress duly as scheduled. That it should do so most definitely reflects a sense of stability, responsibility and endurance, which is likely to advance the political activities of this middle-of-the-road party. It also stands a sure manifestation of President Hosni Mubarak's who steered Egypt away from the evils of international crisis.
Content-wise, since the convening in 2002 of the 8th NDP general congress, the Policy Secretariat has introduced new members, who have been effected drastic changes and reforms. Growth has reached unprecedented rates. Reforms were introduced to the taxation system. Red-tape and bureaucracy were contained and greater investments were attracted.
Major political reforms were put into effect, the most prominent of which is electing the present by direct ballot for the first time in Egypt's history.
Laws were also promulgated to protect the family and ensure women's rights.
This year 9th NDP General Congress is scheduled to discuss major issues, such as population increase, which has a negative impact on Egypt's development.
Hopes are high that, in its capacity as the ruling majority party, the NDP will maintain the social dimension in all its plans and programs,
given that it is the key to stability and solidarity.
