Lisbon draft communiqué stresses historical European-African relationship

The EU-Africa Summit will kick off in the Portuguese capital Saturday 8/12/2007 with the historical ties between the two continents taking centre stage along with the need to sustain partnership between the two sides.

Partnership between Africa and Europe should be based on constructive dialogue, understanding and mutual respect, according to a draft communiqué.

In it, a new European-African strategy is defined as the strong basis for ambitious and sustainable partnership, which will, hopefully, bear fruit for peoples on both sides of the Mediterranean.

The draft communiqué also welcomes the first action plan and underscores the need to quickly work on priorities agreed upon by Europe and Africa.

A periodical EU-Africa meeting will be held every three years. It starts in Lisbon tomorrow.

The draft communiqué will underline the need for developing and boosting partnership between Europe and Africa through the principles of dialogue, understanding and mutual respect.

The draft communiqué will assert that joint partnership between the EU and Africa will serve as a strong basis for ambitious and sustainable partnership.
