Egypt urges protection of Lebanon's monuments

Egypt urged the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to immediately intervene to protect Lebanon's monuments from the Israeli air strikes.

Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Antiquities Dr. Zahi Hawwas said that many of Lebanon's monuments fall under the world heritage especially those in the southern village of Tyre.

Ali Abdul-Maqsoud, the head of the Central Administration for Egyptian Antiquities, said that the Arab Union of Archaeologists should take concrete steps to protect Lebanon's monuments.

He said that relevant international agreements ban any attack on archeological sites in time of war and armed conflicts.
