Thoughts & notions

The statements issued by G-8 leaders on the tragic events in Lebanon, if described, can be said to align with Washington's stance in support of the Israeli aggression. The US, the world's only super power, under President Bush's administration has abandoned all values of right and justice. It stands unrecognizing both the illegitimacy of the Israeli occupation and its violation of international law.

It has become obvious that the goal underlying Israel's plan is not retaliation for the killing of two of its soldiers and the capture of two others at the hands of Hezbollah. Israel's real intention is to destroy Lebanon. In my view, however, as the barbaric military operations continue into the near future, the Israeli people, used to short, fleeting wars, will be unsettled. This sense of anxiety has already been reflected in the media, which have been criticizing the Army of not being able to win its battles thus far. This, in turn, has prompted Army leaders to insinuate an Iranian-Syrian involvement in striking Israeli targets.

Soon, moreover, the picture will be clear regarding efforts exerted by the UN and the EU with the purpose of reaching an acceptable formula for a ceasefire. The sure thing is that any reachable deal is most likely to be influenced by the amount of pressure brought to bear on both sides as well as by increasing casualties.
