Qana massacre

Yesterday, Israel committed a heinous crime against humanity when Israel Air Force (IAF) bombarded a building in Qana thus killing more than 55 most of them were children and women. The scene was really tragic in the full sense of the word given that the corpses of the children were taken from the rubble. In the first ever response to the crime, many angry Lebanese attacked the UN headquarters in Beirut.

In fact, what happened in Qana is a war crime given that the victims are innocent civilians; therefore an international investigation into the massacre is required to punish war criminals who committed this horrible crime. It is noteworthy to mention that Qana tragedy takes place for the second time as the IAF committed a similar massacre in 1996 against civilians who sought refuge in a UN camp there. No doubt, the UN Security Council should issue an immediate ceasefire resolution given that there is no room for talking about the implementation of UNSC resolution 1559 as this may be done later on through Arab, Lebanese and international agreement.

The major powers, in particular the five permanent members in the UNSC, should bear responsibility and present a draft resolution to the council which should stipulate an immediate ceasefire. This does not mean suspending the diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching a comprehensive solution to the crisis according to the French vision which calls for ceasefire without pre-conditions then the implementation of 1559 including Israel's withdrawal from Sheeba Farms.
