Mubarak discusses with Assad positions in Syria, Lebanon
President Hosni Mubarak paid a few hours visit to Damascus yesterday where he held talks with President Bashar el- Assad on regional and international developments as well as positions in Syria and Lebanon following Mehlis report on the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
The two leaders discussed developments of the Iraq and Palestinian issues and means of enhancing the Arab joint action. They also reviewed relations between Egypt and Syria and means of developing such relations in different fields.
Foreign Minster Ahmed Abul-Gheit declared, before the visit, that the draft resolution offered to the UN Security Council does not include, till this moment, imposing sanctions on Syria but it includes some specified requests.
Abul-Gheit said that Mehlis report on the assassination of Hariri is not the only document in the issue, but it also includes the statement delivered by Mehlis before the UNSC in which he said that investigations may take months or years, the matter which means that the report refers to individuals not a state.
Syrian presidency issued a statement following the summit in which it said that both presidents Mubarak and Assad stressed the necessity of not using Mehlis report for political targets or to serve certain parties. President Assad renewed, during the meeting, Syria's readiness for cooperation with the International Investigation Committee.
President Mubarak was accompanied by Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit, Information Minister Anas El Fiki and Presidential Cabinet Chief Zakaria Azmy.
Syrian Information Minister Mahdi Dakhl-Allah made it clear that President Mubarak's visit came in the frame of continuous coordination and consultation between Egypt and Syria. He added that the visit came in the frame of the latest developments in light of Mehlis report and the support of the Arab League for the Syrian stance.
