President Hosni Mubarak on Wednesday 24/1/2007 presided over a meeting of the Supreme Police Council at the Police Academy premises in Cairo's al-Abbassiya district.
The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif, Interior Minister Habib Al-Adli and Police top brass.
President Hosni Mubarak launched the website of the Interior Ministry during Police Day celebrations.
During his meeting with police top brass, President Mubarak listened to the advantages of the website that includes all information on the ministry in implementation of the transparency and credibility principle.
The website includes other subsites like passports and Immigration Authority, Traffic General Administration, Prisons Authority and the Anti-narcotics General Administration.
President Hosni Mubarak awarded several police top brass and officers medals in recognition of their distinguished accomplishments.
President Hosni Mubarak honoured also police martyrs who sacrificed their lives to maintain law and order and defend the country against evil doers.
The President bestowed the Order of Republic of the Third Class on martyrs Colonel Ahmed Mahmoud Mussalam and Lieutenant Colonel Abdel Khaleq Abu Zayed and the Medal of Merit of the Fifth Class on Martys Mohamed Bakhit Ahmed, Abdel-Aziz Al-Maadawi, Mohamed Madi and Hamdi Hassanein .Addressing the festival held on the occasion of the Police Day, President Mubarak said this glorious day in the history of Egypt symbolizes sustained sacrifices and giving by policemen.
The President said policemen are still waging a battle against the powers of extremism which aim at taking the country many years to the back, fomenting sedition between Muslims and Copts and undermining national unity.
The President said the Armed Forces men are the shield of the homeland and policemen are the main bastion of Egypt's security and stability.
The President said Egypt is forging ahead towards reform in its different axes and seeks to steer away from chaos and setbacks. The President said the present time adds many burdens to policemen if terror is to be eradicated.
Meanwhile, President Mubarak said Wednesday the proposed Constitutional amendments will open the door for drafting a new legislation that will tighten noose on terrorism and abort its schemes by the force of law. "They are the defenders of Egypt's stability and the safety of its citizens," Mubarak said. President Mubarak underlined the importance of the current stage through which the national economy is passing.
"Fruits of our economic reforms should help fighting poverty and developing health, education, drinking water, drainage and social insurance services," he said. "It is my responsibility to defend Egypt's national security, sovereignty and independence," he added.
President Mubarak expressed determination to carry on with the reform process at all levels with steady steps, saying stability is a key to reform and development.
The only alternative to stability is chaos, turbulence, setbacks and dangerous cliffs, he said. He said the state is keen on not mixing politics with religion and abiding by legitimacy in practicing political activities.
"Policemen are bearing numerous burdens that require double efforts," he said citing work to complete the new electronic ID cards project, modernize eligible voters' lists, ensure safety of elections, fight crime and corruption, maintain order and discipline and protect installations at the various production and service sites. But I am confident that policemen are up to these responsibilities," Mubarak said.
At the end of the speech, President Mubarak greeted' policemen defending Egypt's stability and security and those taking part in international peacekeeping operations away from the soil of their beloved and dear homeland.
Moreover, President Hosni Mubarak affirmed that there would be no privatization of the national newspapers (the state-owned newspapers and supervised by the Shura Council) confirming his keenness on retaining them to continue playing their role as genuine expresser of the nation and the interests of the homeland.
