November 7, 1997Mubarak’s statements to Gulf News Agency

In statements to the Gulf News Agency, President Mubarak said that Egypt is looking forward to bringing about peace and stability in the entire region. He also added that there was no problem between Egypt and Israel at the present time. "We feel disturbed when we hear about the death of an Israeli or a Palestinian child as we do care about preserving human life be it a Muslim, Christian or a Jew in Israel or any where else. Only a comprehensive peace would lead the way to region's stability," he said.

On his talks with Sheikh Issa, the Egyptian leader told the news agency that they had discussed means to further Egyptian-Bahraini ties, the latest developments pertaining to the Gulf and the Middle East peace process, adding that Cairo and Manama shared identical views on these issues.

President Mubarak added that Egypt would not object to holding an emergency Arab summit if the Arab leaders wanted to or if there were sound reasons for it.

President Mubarak meanwhile praised the strong and good relations binding Cairo with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states.

"Our relations with (GCC) states are very good and we have joint cooperation accords with them in all economic and political fields and even there is military cooperation with some Gulf States" he said.

Egypt, Syria and the six (GCC) members have set up early in the 1990's a grouping, officially known as "The Damascus Declaration".

President Mubarak, who had flown into Manama from Oman after a three-day state visit during which he met with Sultan Qaboos bin Said, held an official round of talks with Sheikh Issa attended by top-ranking Egyptian and Bahraini officials.

Following the talks, Sheikh Issa who welcomed the Egyptian leader at Manama airport earlier in the day, lauded the already excellent ties between Cairo and Manama and applauded President Mubarak's wise policies that aim at achieving an all-out socio-economic development for Egypt.

Prior to his departure, Presiden Mubarak, accompanied by Prime Minister Dr. Kamal Al-Ganzouri, paid a courtesy call to Bahrain's Premier Sheikh Khalifa Bin Saiman Al-Khalifa to express his best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Meanwhile, Palestinian President Yasser Arafat arrived in Cairo today for talks with President Mubarak on the stalled peace process.
