December 1, 1997 Mubarak grants interview to "Mayo"
"The trial of delinquent policemen, accountable for Luxor incident, will start on 21st December current," said President Mubarak in an interview with Samir Ragab, "Mayo" Editor-in-Chief. Mubarak affirmed that such trial will include both high ranks and new officers, as new officers are following suit their leaders.
The Egyptian leader has confirmed that the hermitic security measures, recently adopted, were put into force in tourist sites, indicating that such measures would completely secure Egypt’s tourists, especially that Egypt is famous for its warm hospitality.
President Mubarak also said those who encourage acts of violence and crime perpetration are citing false justifications under the pretext of the human rights, adding that harboring terrorists is absolutely violation to all values, norms and principles of the human rights.
"What about the lives of innocent people who were victimized by terrorism?!" wondered Mubarak, citing "Shaima", a little schoolgirl who lost her life at the hands of a terrorist who is now enjoying UK protection under the slogan of human rights.
Mubarak touched on the outcome of his talks with leader of SPLA, Garang, adding we received him to hear his viewpoint on bids to stop bloodshed in the Sudan. President Mubarak stressed that Sudan’s integrity should be maintained, pointing out to Garang’s assertions that the integrity of the Sudan will never be surrendered.
Mubarak, further, said that Egypt is keen on maintaining the interests of the Sudanese people, and is ready to turn new leaf on its relations with the Sudan provided that rulers of the Sudan should abide by historical ties binding the two peoples.
In this respect, Mubarak added, Egypt has called on the government of the Sudan to return the Egyptian buildings which it confiscated, as Egypt does not care about such buildings’ value, rather it deems this as a symbol incarnating the time-honored ties binding the two countries.
Replying to a query on his vision towards tourist movement in Egypt in view of Luxor incident, Mubarak affirmed that Egypt, the country of matchless tourist sites and kind people, is capable of overcoming the negative impact of this vicious act. "This, however, will take little time," added the Egyptian leader.
On Egypt’s economy and its relation with tourism retreat, Mubarak said Egypt’s unshakable economy depends on several and main sources, affirming that Egypt’s economy, under the economic reform programme launched years ago, is sound, strong and promising.
