About the Peace Process - Inaugural Session of the People’s Assembly,
It has become an axiom that the Arab nation has opted for comprehensive and just peace and adopted a peaceful approach in dealing with all states and peoples. It should, however, be understood that the kind of peace we accept is one that covers the entire Middle East region, as we are all partners in destiny.
I need not, at this point, refer to the exigency of making rapid and tangible progress on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks of negotiations. We are totally confident that the Syrian and Lebanese peoples are serious about choosing peace as a means to bring order into the region without delay or hesitation.
We hope that the new Israeli government will begin to activate peaceful efforts in good faith, with a view to preserving peace and reinforcing the efforts toward reconciliation and coexistence in the face of the elements of blind extremism and bigotry.
We also look forward to the full implementation of the Palestinian-Israeli agreement, signed in Taba and then in Washington last September, in order to open the door before negotiations on the final status of the West Bank and Gaza strip along with the future of Jerusalem.
With regard to Africa, there are still key issues that demand the attention of the African group, and the Organization of African Unity in particular.
