Address by President Muhammad Hosni Mubarak on the Occasion of the Liberation of Sinai

Brothers & Sisters,
On this glorious day every year, we celebrate together one of the greatest events in the history of Egypt. Nothing equals the liberation of land, national will, restoration of dignity and pride. Since the dawn of history, the Egyptian has considered his land as sacred and highly esteemed. He viewed it as a highly-protected value, beyond any encroachment or disparagement.

Defence of land is set on the topmost scale of patriotism. It was inevitable for the Egyptian people to crown their magnificent victory on those eternal days of October 1973 by liberating the rest of their dear land and realising the complete restoration of every inch of their national soil off the clutches of the usurping occupation.

That was a sublime objective that accepts no bargaining. Fighting through the wilderness for the defense of the country, Egyptians have already sacrificed their lives for the cause of the home-land. Inevitably destiny would respond favourably to such efforts.

Because Egyptians have a civilisation and message, they have realised by their historical consciousness and sense of patriotism that liberalisation should be followed by reconstruction because all God's gifts to Egypt should be harnessed for reconstruction and the spreading of civilisation.

Therefore, it was necessary that every spot in Sinai should be a symbol of progress and civilisation and a source of prosperity for land owners and progress-makers. So it goes without saying that Sinai should be, at any cost a symbol of Egyptian's insistence to reach his goals even if he will carve into or break up the rock. Hence, the liberalisation which has been sustained by Egyptians through construction was a great epic of struggle and civilisation, eloquently and equally expressing the value of the land and the nature of the people.

This victorious march which has become a visible and undeniable reality for workers now stands as a proof of the genuine goodness nature of the Egyptians and time-honoured history of this land.

This liberation has been, and will ever continue to be, by all standards, a historic achievement, that will be circulated among the Egyptians, generation after generation thus insinuating into their sons the values of patriotism and self-sacrifice of their homeland. There is nothing more precious than the honour of the homeland, the dignity of the people and sovereignty over its land.

The consummation of liberation was a great achievement by the Egyptian armed forces who engaged in the most fierce battles without any fear or hesitation. They hoisted the banner of God and homeland, declaring in the loudest voice that patriotism is the most sublime of human values, that the genuine Egyptian does not accept any aggression against his homeland, any debasement of his dignity or his pride.

The adherence by the Egyptian people with all its categories to the value of absolute loyalty to the homeland was the main element that saved and protected its march over centuries.

Our sincere greetings to the armed forces members, who willingly lost their lives as martyrs in the battle field, sacrificing their lives for the sake of freedom and pride. This sacrifice has provided the most magnificent stories of struggle for the homeland and a source of inspiration of freedom to all nations yearning for national salvation.

Salutation is due to the soul of late President Anwar Sadat; the warpeace decision maker. Let it be also to the Egyptian people who did help make it through endeavour, knowledge, hope, pain, tolerance, suffering, blood and sweat, thus making the greatest epic in the history of national endeavour and sacrifice for the liberation and glory of the homeland.

May God bless us all.
Peace be upon you.
