Age-old Papyri Recaptured by Egypt


Within the context of Egypt's efforts to recapture its monumental treasures smuggled abroad, highly significant papyri, including one dating 4963 years ago were restored. The invaluable papyri were voluntarily handed over by a Norwegian trader to the Bernard Quarantizi House of Ancient Manuscripts.

French Knight Medal to an Egyptian Artist


A French Knight Medal for arts and Letters was awarded to Dr. Na'ima al- Shirbini, in recognition of her artistic achievements. The medal was presented by the French Consul- General at Alexandria in a ceremony held on this occasion.

Dr. Ibrahim abdel- Nabi, professor of surgery at Ein Shams University College of Medicine was awarded the membership of the American Association of Gastroenterological Surgery.

Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz Member of Futurology Council


As part of UNESCO's preparations for the upcoming century, Secretary-General Fredrico Mayor invited Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz to accept the membership of Futurology Council, a consultative body concerned with world political, cultural, scientific and social affairs, also comprising a galaxy of eminent thinkers and distinguished figures. Mr. Mahfouz was selected on the strength of his international cultural weight as Nobel- Prize –winner for literature , 1988.
Zowail Wins Nobel Prize for Chemistry , 1999
Egyptian- born -and- educated Dr. Ahmad Zowail was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry, 1999 by the Royal Swedish Academy of Science for his pioneering use of rapid-fire laser flashes that illuminate motion of atoms in a molecule by innovating the tiny measure of femtosecond. Earlier, the US Los Angeles Time magazine had listed Dr. Zowail as one of 30 scientists living in California , who greatly influenced or modified scientific and technological concepts during the 20 Th. Century. In a special issue on science and technology, the magazine pointed out that more than than any individual or group , those scientists rendered the best services to the world



Successful Egyptian Tests on Diabetes Treatment


A research team from al-Azhar University College of Pharmacy announced that it has managed, in conjunction with teams from Kyoto and Sheba universities of Japan to conduct preliminary tests for the treatment of diabetes. The test , applied to Guinea pigs , were made by subdermally transplanting botanical tissue cells to provide the body with effective materials. The cells are extracted from "Samo" plant , found in plenty in Sinai Peninsula, and lupine seeds.



An Egyptian Satellite for Scientific Discoveries

The Egyptian Space Research Council has drawn up an executive programme to build Egypt's first satellite for scientific discoveries. The satellite, to be operational within two years, will be used for the development of peaceful application purposes, especially for desert explorations. At present, several ground stations are being built to receive satellite data, monitor and analyze climatic phenomena and forecast future changes.
