Foreword

Figures Never Err

The sweeping public election, on September 26, 1999 of President Mohammad Hosni Mubarak for a new term in office was in fact a recognition of the achievements of a leader who has always honoured his promise to the nation and shown strict commitment to the interests of the broader masses. Of paramount importance has been his keen interest in maintaining sustainable development through a plethora of unprecedented mega projects spread all over the country, designed to secure the future of coming generations.

Over the past eighteen years, Egypt has successfully managed to bottom up from economic crisis , laying down foundations for comprehensive development and revival. Well-studied plans have been devised and implemented to ensure smooth transition to an economy that can cater for the needs of a rising population, secure a brighter future for the coming generations and measure up with the increasingly globalized world economy.

Keeping away from high rhetoric, the achievements already made over the past two decades are so visible and tangible to any plain citizen, let alone many outside observers, particularly when expressed in the unerring language of figures.
These achievements started with a total overhaul of the country's infrastructure, followed by a successful economic reform and structural adjustment process. This resulted in building a broad base for commodity and service production and completing and reinforcing market-oriented economic, regulatory and control institutions to ensure sound and smooth economic transition, transparency and efficiency in economic and financial business.

Private sector investments in development projects now account for 71 % of aggregate investments. All through, due care was given to low- income brackets and economic burdens were equally distributed to various segments of the community.
It is now a settled conviction by the Egyptian people that President Mubarak's new term in office , based on practical experience, will be bustling with vitality, exertion and hope, in pursuit of welfare and prosperity for the whole nation.
