2nd World Modern Pentathlon
Championship
Pentathlon has recently become one of the bright facades of the Egyptian sport, in view of its promising players of whom an international champion appears every year. Thereupon, Egyptian modern pentathlon players enjoy such a competitive status in world championships in which they participate, especially World Male-Junior Championships under 18, and World Youth Championships under 21. Pentathlon is a sport consisting of five sports, namely jogging, swimming, archery, fencing and horse-riding.
During last February and March, Egypt organized two championships, namely the 7th African Championship, on February 22, that is considered the first international championship to qualify for the Olympics in Beijing, 2008.
In the 7th African Championship, Egypt ranked first and both Aya Medany and Amr el-Gezeiry won gold medals, and thus were qualified for the 2008- Olympics.
On March 22, and for four successive days, the Egyptian Federation for Pentathlon organized the 2nd World Cup, which competitions for archery, fencing and swimming were held in Al-Shams Club while those of horse-riding and in Armed Forces Horse-Riding Club.
In this Championship, the Egyptian player, Aya Medany who is seeded No. 5 in the world, ranked third and won the bronze medal. It's worthy mentioning that Aya Medany ranked first in the last world Cup Championship. In addition, Yasser Hefni, World Male- Junior Champion, ranked 10th while Amr el-Gezeiry ranked 13th.
Mr. Ahmad Nasser, the President of the Egyptian Federation for Modern Pentathlon, asserted that about 164 of top world players, men and women, participated in the Championship, representing 26 countries in addition to Egypt, the hosting country.
On the other hand, the significance of this Championship stems from the distinction of the participating players who are all world classified players, namely the first ten worldwide. Egypt's distinguished organization of the Championship last September was much appreciated by the World Federation; this assigned Egypt with that mission afterwards.
In this vein, Mr. Claus Shorman, the President of the World Federation for Pentathlon, made it clear that he, together with the members of the Federation, came to Egypt to follow up the effectuations of the Championship, in full recognition of Egypt's distinguished organization of such a remarkable Championship that is the first of its kind in view of the number of participating countries and players. Mr. Claus expressed his appreciation of the Egyptian Federation for Pentathlon, regarding it as one of the best worldwide.
Participating Countries in the World Cup:
About 164 players, representing 26 countries in addition to Egypt, participated in the competition, namely Sweden, France, Lithuania, Britain, Austria, Spain, Switzerland, Korea, Kazakstan, China, Hungary, Latvia, Portugal, Russia, Georgia, Neatherlands and Egypt.
Participating Countries in the African Championship:
Although the African Federation for Modern Pentathlon is 18 years old, the serious practice of the sport could be witnessed only in Egypt and Cameroon that actually participated in the African Championship.
What is Modern Pentathlon?
It is an individual sport, consisting of five sports, namely jogging, archery, swimming, fencing and horse-riding. Since it emerged, its philosophy is based on challenging the player's skills in five successive competitions. Out of those competitions, the player gets a total score that determines his rank in the Championship.
Modern Pentathlon was enlisted in Stockholm Olympic Competitions in Swede, 1912. The Olympic Committee has been in charge of this sport till the World Federation for Modern Pentathlon was established in 1948. The first Male Competition was held in 1949, while the first Female Competition in 1981 in London.
A Brief on the Egyptian Federation for Modern Pentathlon:
- Established in February, 1975.
- Notarized and joined the membership of the World Federation in 1976.
- Joined the membership of the Egyptian Olympic Committee in January, 1976.
- Participated for the first time in the World Male-Junior Competition in Poland, 1976.
- Participated for the first time in the World Senior Championship in Budapest. 1984.
- Assigned with Organizing the Worth 24th Male-Junior Competition, under 21 years, in October, 1988.
- Organized the World Cup in September, 2006.
Egyptian Champions in Bejing Olympics:
Aya Medany:
- Born on November 20, 1988, and joined the team in 2001.
- A student in the first year in the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport.
- Ranks 5th among World Modern Pentathlon players.
- Won four team medals in world competitions.
- Participated in Athens Olympics, 2004 and she was the youngest player, only 16 years old, in the competition.
- Participated in the World Cup in Greece, July 2005, and ranked 8th.
Amr el-Geziuy:
- Born on November 29, 1986, and joined the team in 2004.
- A student in the third year, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University.
- Participated in 16 World Championships and seeded No. 13 in the world.
- Won five individual world medals and five teams medals.
