Mourad Ramzy Salama, a simple man of 47 and wide brown eyes. Seeing his easy-going manners, you just can not imagine he was awarded a very distinguished honour; the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.

What is it ?
The highest honor awarded by the state of Kentucky is the Kentucky Colonel. The colonels are Kentucky's ambassadors of good will and fellowship round the globe. Commissions for Kentucky Colonels are awarded for contributions to the community, state, or nation and for special achievements of all kinds. Commissions as a Kentucky Colonel are awarded by the Governor for service and accomplishments on behalf of fellow men.

A List of Kentucky Colonels is a "Who is Who" of outstanding men and women all round globe. The certificate, signed by the Governor and the Secretary of State and bearing the Great Seal of Kentucky, has hung on the walls of such distinguished leaders as US President Johnson and English Prime Minister Churchill. America's first man in space, John Glenn, was commissioned while orbiting earth on his historic mission. Entertainers such as Late Bing Crosby and Red Skelton were commissioned for their achievements.

It all began with the first Governor of Kentucky, Issac Shelby, who gave his son-in-law, Charles Todd, the title of colonel of his staff. Shelby later issued commissions to all who enlisted in his regiment in the War of 1812. Later, Governors commissioned colonels to act as their protective guards; they wore uniforms and were present at most official functions. The "Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels" was founded in 1932 by Governor Ruby Laffoon and has since been officially incorporated as charitable organization.

Over the years colonels contributed thousands of dollars to worthy causes.
The Order's formation was the idea of Charles Pettijohn, then chief counsel of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America, who was appointed the first National Commanding General of the Order. This position included responsibility for the finances of the Order, as well as its highest rank. Anna Bell Ward was appointed Secretary and given the job of "organizing" the colonels. All officers do serve without remuneration. Once a year Kentucky Colonels from all countries go there to celebrate fellowship in the true spirit of Kentucky hospitality.

Ancient Diseases

Researchers in Manchester University in England discovered a new scientific method of anatomy to be operated on an Ancient Egyptian mummy; thus keeping its form and contents from distortion. This comes as part of the researches shared by Egyptian, British and American scientists and conducted with the aim of discovering some ancient diseases, dating back 5000 years, through examination of mummies by modern medical equipment; thus keeping mummies from destruction. Photographing of inner parts of the mummy is done by making a small hall in any of its parts through which delicate equipment go inside to take photos. Experiments are to be operated on an Egyptian mummy dating back 2000 years. The mummy is of a middle class woman who died of old age, and has some jewelry on her. It was given as a gift to the university, by a British scientist specialized in Egyptian antiquities.

Cure for Kidney

Medical researches conducted in Kasr El-Aini hospital in Egypt proved that the acid of "Saliest Hydro Ksiamic" is effective in curing kidney stones, especially cystic calculuses or calculus of "calcium". Taking capsules of this medicine gradually causes stones to shrink. The credit of discovering this effective substance goes to Egyptian Scientist Dr. Mansour Khalifa, professor of chemistry in pharmacology college, Cairo University. Medical researches proved that the discovered medicine fragments all kinds of kidney stones after few weeks. Such researches conducted on 70 patients in Kasr Al-Aini, proved that the new medicine also relieves pains accompanying formation of such stones. Moreover, no side effects on kidenys or liver have been noted. Manufacturing the new medicine is now under study. Such medicine is badly needed by those patients whose stones are difficult to be fragmented by usual ways. Effectiveness of the medicine ranges from 92% to 100%.

The Deaf Unit

Do you know about the deaf unit ?
If so, that's great. This means you are one of the friends and supporters and one would like to thank you for wonderful encouragement. If not, let us share with you about the Deaf Unit in Old Cairo (Misr El-Qadima). It's a private school for deaf children that started in 1982 with four children, one teacher and one housemother. The school has now grown to fifty children; fourteen come daily and the rest are weekly boarders. The atmosphere at the school is like a big family. All share, play, eat and learn together, with the aim to help the children have confidence and self-reliance, to encourage them to accept their handicap, to train them to read & write & lip-read etc...There are many activities outside the classroom at the school. 1996 summer the school was going to build on four rooms for a new vocational training centre for deaf teenagers. Eleven children in total have graduated from the school so far.

Mother is land

Mother is land, Mother is dignity, Mother is Egypt, Nothing first but you, So I sacrifice my life only for you, My love is utter and has no limit, I do believe in you and loyal forever to you, More than enough for me to belong to you, Nile streams in my soul, What a pretty good speed, Where peace and serenity prevail....Such so simple but expressive and impressive lines are the creation of Mohamad Abdel-Hakim a.k.a. "Sheikh El-Masri". He is an NDP official and well-versed in his work. Seeing him, yes you can tell he is a poet. He is a multi-talented man of 40 years old. This particular song is well in demand, as many singers and composers want it. But he - as much as he wishes it released - is so selective about it, not that it is his only but dearest.
