Parliament of the Future Egypt's Longest Electoral Marathon

On December 7, 2005, Egypt's one-month long electoral marathon came to an end, thus terminating the last phase of the legislative elections, held for the first time after the amendment of Article 76 of the Constitution, to choose the members of the Parliament of the future, totalling 444.
The elections witnessed unprecedented events as follows:
1- The High Committee on elections exercised complete supervision on elections and drew up all the related legal measures and frameworks.
 
2- Unprecedentedly, the ballot papers were put in transparent glass boxes and phosphoric ink was used to ensure Notes credibility.
 
3- Elections were held under three phases to ensure complete judicial supervision. Phase I started in 9 governorates on November 9,2005, Phase II started in 8 governorates on November 20,2005 while phase III started in 9 governorates on December 1,2005 and ended on December 7, 2005, under the supervision of 11,000 judges during each of the three phases.
 
Monitoring the Elections:
The High Committee on Elections allowed the representatives of the National Council of Human Rights and NGOs to monitor the elections, Permits were issued conditional that they are known for their neutrality; they do not belong to any party on run for the elections lest they would back any candidate or party.
 
Permits were issued upon the approval of the judge, presiding the polling station; however, permits holders are not allowed to interfere in the electoral process, conduct interviews or circulate a questionnaire among the electorate, NGOs, especially the National Council of Human Rights, were allowed to monitor elections inside the polling stations during the polling and sorting ballots.
 
Elections Final Results:
 
5177 candidates ran for the elections, of which 444 nominated by the National Democratic Party (NDP), while the others are either nominees of opposition parties or independent. By the end of the three-phase elections, the NDP ranked first, winning 71.9% i.e. 311 of the total of seats, independents won 112 seats i.e 25.9%, al-Wafd candidates 6 seats, al-Tagamú 2 and 1, out of 432 seats. Elections were cancelled in 6 constituencies.
 
Elections were held in 216 general constituencies out of 222 all over Egypt, while sub-voting stations totalled 30741. Number of electorate hit 31,826,284, while the body of voters reached 9,098,373 i.e. 28.5% of the total number of electorate. During the re-elections, 7,010,543 cast their votes i.e 23.87%. The general percentage of voters hit 26.2% of the total of electorate.
