
Environmental protection is an important strategic issue on Egypt's top priority list, given its impact on various walks of life both at present and in future and being one of the most serious challenges that face the society.
Attention to environment is now a mainstay of sustainable development and the strategic goal of this component is to embed and activate this development concept through integrating environ-mental standards into development policies, programs, plans and projects.
Executive Environmental Programs Comprise the Following:

- The Nile Water Quality Monitoring Program
- Environment-friendly Industrial Cities Program
- Technology Transfer Program:
- Afforestation and Green Area Expansion Program
- Nature Protection and Reserve Management Program
Nature Reserves:
Egypt is fraught with matchless and diversified natural resources along coasts, in deserts and among mountains and valleys in addition to its moderate climate all over the year. This has helped create a variety of distinguished ecosystems and biological diversity. Thus, in view of the importance of those natural resources, Law No. 102/1983 was is-sued and consequently 24 nature reserves during the period 1983-2003 were declared occupying 10 percent of Egypt's total area. It is aimed to increase the number of reserves, thus bringing total nature reserves to 18 percent of Egypt's total area by year 2017.

3- Elba Reserves, Red Sea
4- Al-Ameed Reserve, Matrouh Governorate
5- Salouga and Gazal Reserve, Aswan Governorate
6- Ashtoum al-Gameel and the Islet of Tennees Reserve, Port Said Governorate
7- St.Catherine Reserve, South Sinai
8- Al-Alaqi Valley, Aswan Governorate
9- Taba Reserve, South Sinai Governorate
10- Lake al-Borollus Reserve, Kafr esh-Sheikh Governorate
11- Coastal Thickets (al-Ahrash) Reserve, North Sinai Governorate
12- Wadi Degla Reserve, Cairo Governorate
13- The Fossilized Forest Reserve, Ma'adi, Cairo Governorate
14- Al-Wadi al-Assiuti, Assiut Governorate

Future Nature Reserves:
About 19 reserves are to be declared in future: al-Qasima, al-Maghara, Ra's al-Hekma, ash-Shoeila, as-Saloum, al-Qasr, Wadi Gi-ravi, al-Qatara Depression, Um al-Gjezlan, al-Galala, al-Qebleya, Red Sea, Ra's Shoqeir Salina, Shayeb al-Banat, Wadi Qena, the White Desert, Um ad-Dabadeeb, Hamata, Karkoud Naql and al-Golf al-Kabeir.
