
In the framework of the state's commitment to provide health services and medicine to all citizens, especially the unprivileged categories, the health sector has made major achievements in this respect.
First: Health Care
Investments in Health Service Sector:
Investments implemented in the field of health services during 2002/03 showed about LE 2.2 billion, including L.E. 1.4 billion accounting for 65 percent by the government sector and the rest by the private sector.
Health Services Indicators in 2002/03:
- Number of public and central hospitals mounted to 250.

- Number of rural hospitals mounted to 631.
- Number of rural health units reached 3964.
- Number of beds mounted to 143100.
- Average bed occupancy at the Ministry of Health (MOH) hospitals reached 76 percent.
- Wireless coverage of emergency and intensive care units were extended to 27 governments.
- Number of basic care health units mounted to 4680 comprising health offices and integrated hospitals.
- A national blood transfusion center has been established and is now operating in Cairo, in addition to seven regional centers in governorates.
- Thirty blood transfusion centers have already been revamped and outfitted countrywide, while the upgrading of 16 other centres is underway.
- Fifty outfitted blood donation and distribution vehicles to governorates have been provided.
- Number of physicians mounted to 145,000 of whom 58,829 are MOH-registered.
- Number of dentists mounted to 18,200 of whom 7.631 are MOH-registered.
- Number of pharmacists mounted to 37,500 of whom 4,345 are MOH-registered.
- Number of nursing staff reached 176,000 of whom 93,931 are MOH –registered.

Health Insurance:
The umbrella of health insurance in Egypt was expanded to cover plain citizens, students and children. The number of the insured reached 30.64 million beneficiaries.

State-financed Medical Treatment:
It is the state policy to offer state-financed medical treatment to low-income brackets. Thus, the number of beneficiaries increased to 438,714 during the first half of 2002 up from 338,254 during the corresponding period of 2001.
Treatment expenses mounted to L.E. 581,212,426 in the first half of 2002 against L.E. 500,281,720 during the corresponding period of 2001.
Second: Population
It is the government population policy to find effective and dynamic solutions to the population problem.
Population inside Egypt is expected to reach 67.313 million in 2002/03 and 68.600 million in 2003/04 with an increase of 1,287,000 at a growth rate of 1.91 percent.
Normal Population Growth during 2002*: 
Normal growth rate was reduced to 1.99 percent in 2002 down from 2.18 percent in 1996.
Normal population growth in 2002 mounted to 1,327,196 with a monthly increase of 110,600 and a daily increase estimated at 3,636; i.e. one birth every 23.7 seconds.
Normal growth rate in 2002 reached 1.99 percent in 2001. The reduction roots back to a decline in birth rate from about 26.69 per thousand in 2001 to 26.28 per thousand by the end of 2002.
Besides, mortality rate changed from 6.27 per thousand in 2001 to 6.37 per thousand by the end of 2002.
The 2003/04 plan aims to reduce birth rate to 25 per thousand and mortality rate to 6.2 per thousand.

Population and Family Planning:
- Contraceptive usage rate reached 56.1 percent.
- Total fertility rate mounted to 3.5 children per woman.
- A number of 1008851 women were referred to family planning clinics of whom 250160 beneficiaries received contraceptives through MOH units.
- A number of 194,951 beneficiaries were referred to maternity clinics.
