Top Egyptian officials attended Friday's gorgeous inauguration ceremony of the African Cup of Nations (ACN), hosted by Egypt, reported the CNN on Saturday.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was among the audience and officially declared the beginning of the tournament.
Flags of participating states were introduced in a "colorful ceremony", with 16 parachutists landing at the courtyard of the Cairo International Stadium, the broadcaster said.
"A stunning fireworks display lit up the darkened stadium," said the CNN, adding that songs by Moroccan-born pop star Samira Said reflected modern times.
The ceremony was followed by an opening game between Egypt and Libya, with Egypt taking the lead in a 3-0 win over Libya.
