Minister of Interior Mohamed Ibrahim said that the Ministry is analyzing Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis group’s statement that claims responsibility for his assassination attempt.
Ibrahim said that the group’s statement raises doubts over its credibility, especially that it was announced four days after the terrorist attack, pointing out that the statement may be an attempt to mislead investigation departments from arresting the perpetrators.
The minister underlined that the statement may be a reply to the successful military and police operations taking place in Sinai in order to seize terrorists and outlaws in the peninsula.
Meanwhile, security sources said that the terrorist group which claimed responsibility is a Takfiri group consisting of 2000 armed elements who are highly trained on combat and manufacturing bombs and explosives.
The sources said Mohamed el-Zawahri, the brother of al-Qaeda's leader Ayman el-Zawahri, belongs to this group. He was released together with 130 terrorist leaders during the rule of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, a move which was rejected by security bodies in view of the risks they pose to national security.
