Lateefa Adel Salam Az-Zyiat

 
Latifa El Zayat
Lateefa Az-Ayiat is an eminent novelist, literary critic, an academic and an intellectual who is deeply involved in public affairs. Born in Damietta, on August 8, 1923, she received her education at Egyptian schools and later obtained her PH.D in English literature from Cairo University, 1957.
 
As a student:
      - In 1946, Az-Zayiat was elected as the secretary-general of the students' national committee that led the Egyptian national resistance against the British occupation.
Later, she took up several positions, including:
 
    - Head of Department of English Literature, 1952;
    - Head of Department of Criticism at the Theatrical Arts Institute, 1970 – 72;
    - Director of Arts Academy, 1972 – 73;
    - Chairman of the committee of defending national issues, 1979.
 
Lateefa Az-Zyiat held membership of several organizations including:
    - International Council for Peace;
    - Honorary member at the Palestinian Writers Union;
    - Supreme Council of Arts and Literature;
    - Incentive Awards Committees; and
    - Short Story and Novel Committee.
 
In addition, Lateefa Az-Zyiat was an elected member of the first Council for the Egyptian Writers Union. She represented Egypt in many international conferences.
 
Lateefa Az-Zyiat was awarded an International Award of Recognition in Literature in 1996. She died in 1996, leaving behind a wealth of writings including novels, short stories, plays, critical essays and a collection of academic researches and translations.
