Tuesday، 28 February 2017 - 03:34 PM
An international conference addressing freedom, citizenship, integration and social and cultural diversity kicked off on Tuesday 28/2/2017 under the sponsorship of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.
The conference, organized by Al Azhar and the Muslim Council of Elders, will issue Al Azhar Declaration for Muslim-Christian Coexistence".
The declaration will advocate the concepts of freedom, citizenship and coexistence.
Grand Sheikh of Al Azhar Ahmed El Tayyeb, Pope Tawadros II in addition to a large number of religious and academic figures take part in the two-day event.
Grand Imam, the head of the Muslim Council of Elders, urged cooperation among people of different religions to disseminate religious values and principles of cooperation that renounce violence and promote citizenship.
Addressing the opening session the International Conference on "Freedom and Citizenship: Diversity and Integration", Tayyeb exhorted religious institutions in the East and West to confront the phenomenon of Islamophobia in the West which is nurtured by terror and violence mongers.
Tayyeb said the accusations leveled against Islam being behind acts of terror resulted from lack of knowledge about the upright teachings of Islam.
He underlined the role of intellectuals and religious scholars in confronting the plague of Islamophobia and terror that harmed Muslims in the West.
In his speech at the conference of freedom and citizenship, Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria and Patriarch of St. Mark Diocese said that hard line and extremist thought should be confronted by enlightened thinking.
He added that extremism is one of the most important challenges facing the principle of co-existence.
He added that Egypt and the region at large are still suffering from terrorism and extremism due to wrong understanding of religion.
One of the most important reasons for extremism is lack of information about the "other", he added.
Grand Imam of Al Azhar regretted depicting Islam as the tool of destruction that simmered wars in the Arab and Islamic region.
He said such acts have nothing to do with Islam, the problem is with linking Islam to such acts.
He added that Muslims in the West have been negatively affected by Islamophobia.
He cautioned that if religious institutions did not confront such phenomenon, it would metastasize to harm Christianity and Judaism sooner or later.
