The two countries have distinguished bilateral relations marked by mutual understanding on regional issues, which contribute to strengthening diplomatic relations based on transparency, clarity, and ongoing coordination. Such political impetus started when "Jose Luis Zapatero" seized power after the Socialist Party had won the legislative elections in March 2004. His period of rule was renewed for another legislative period when the Socialist party swept to victory in the last general election in March 2008.
In the context of the strengthening bilateral relations and widening the consultation circle and political coordination between the two governments on international and regional issues of common interest, the Foreign Ministers of both countries have signed the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Egypt and Spain, during the recent visit of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia to Egypt from February 4th to 6th, 2008, which considered a contractual and political leap in bilateral relations and formed a framework for all aspects of relations between them. The Egyptian side has ended the ratification of the Treaty, and currently preparing for the summit meeting stipulated in it.
