FM discusses with de Mistura means to push political resolution in Syria

In the sidelines of his participation in the Munich Security Conference from 15 to 18 of February, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met today Saturday 17/2/2018 February 17 with the United Nations Secretary General's Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura to discuss the developments of the Syrian crisis and means to push political resolution.
Official MFA Spokesperson Counselor Ahmed Abou Zeid stated that at the beginning of the meeting, Special Envoy de Mistura was keen to inform FM Shoukry about his evaluation of the developments of the Syrian crisis, and his vision on means to resolve the strained political situation, in light of the contact and consultations he recently made with the various Syrian parties and the outcomes of the Sochi Conference. In this regard, de Mistura also reviewed efforts exerted to form a constitutional committee and define its jurisdiction and references under the auspices of the United Nations and the Geneva talks, and on the basis of references of political resolution in Syria, the most important of which is Resolution 2254.
The MFA Spokesperson explained that from his side, FM Shoukry asserted Egypt's keenness to support the Special Envoy's efforts and that he succeeds in his mission. Shoukry emphasized the Egyptian position supporting the political resolution in Syria that would maintain the structure and unity of the Syrian state and its institutions, as well as, meet the aspirations of the brotherly Syrian people. The Foreign Minister emphasized Egypt's firm position toward rejecting any military solutions that would constitute a violation of the Syrian sovereignty and undermine the existing opportunities for political solutions.
The Official Spokesperson added that FM Shoukry, also, emphasized the need to coordinate efforts and movements between the various regional and international efforts during the current phase to urge all Syrian parties to reach consensual and practical solutions to achieve a political resolution to the Syrian crisis.
Abou Zeid concluded his statements noting that the two sides agreed to intensify consultation and coordination regarding the merits of the upcoming period, and exert every effort with all Syrian parties and all actors in the crisis to support the political path to resolve it.
