US renews support for Egypt's war against terrorism

US Central Command chief Gen. Joseph Votel on Monday 19/2/2018 renewed US support for Egypt in the war against terrorism and wished all the best for the Egyptian Armed Forces in the ongoing military operation in Sinai.

In an interview with Extra News TV channel, Votel said that the current military operation in Sinai is very important to face challenges and to secure Egypt's security.

He added that the US is ready to help Egypt in fighting terrorism via exchanging expertise in the field of counter-terrorism.

Votel said he conferred with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, Minister of Defense and Military Production Sedqi Sobhi and Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces General Mohamed Farid Hegazi on means of fostering bilateral relations.

He announced that there are plans to re-organize Operation Bright Star between Egypt and the US, to be launched by the end of 2018.

The US commander said that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) had achieved great successes in confronting terrorism in Syria over the past period. He noted that the US will continue to support the SDF to fight the terrorist group Daesh in the region.

He stressed the US-led coalition’s keenness on supporting Iraq in its war against the terrorist group. 

Votel said that the coalition is working on enhancing the performance of security forces in Afghanistan to secure the country. He underlined the importance of pressing on Taliban at the levels of military, economy and society in order to return to the peace process.

As of Iran, Votel said the US Central Command is working on facing Iran’s activities that threaten the region as well as Washington's regional allies.
