Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received on Monday 5/3/2018 the Envoy of the US Secretary of State for resolving the Qatar crisis, retired U.S. Marine Corps General Anthony Zinni, and the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Gulf affairs, Tim Lenderking, and their accompanying delegation, as part of the delegation’s tour in the region in order to discuss ways of resolving the crisis.
The Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Counselor Ahmed Abu Zeid said Minister Shoukry reviewed the concerns of Egypt and the other states boycotting Qatar regarding the continuation of the latter’s negative role in sponsoring terrorism and extremism either materially via providing safe haven to terrorists, and spreading hate and incitement speech, in addition to its proven interventions in the Arab countries’ internal affairs, which constitute a menace to the societal peace of these countries as well as to the security and stability of the entire Arab region.
For his part, the US Envoy briefed Shoukry on the results of his meetings held so far in the framework of his tour, as well as his assessment of the good offices by His Highness the Emir of Kuwait to resolve the crisis.
The Spokesman added that Foreign Minister hailed the Kuwaiti efforts and affirmed the solidarity and close coordination between the four Arab countries, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain, and their agreement on the need for Qatar to implement the 13 demands’ list, which is consistent with international law. In this context, he pointed out that the four countries proved more than once their seriousness in dealing with the crisis by expressing eagerness for dialogue with Qatar provided that Doha fulfils all its obligations in countering terrorism, and puts an end to its hostile policies in the region. He reiterated that the burden falls on Qatar to demonstrate goodwill, which has not taken place yet despite the endeavors by several regional and international parties to resolve the crisis.
General Zinni also expressed his hope for achieving a satisfactory solution to all parties during the next phase, stressing the United States’ keenness on communicating with all stakeholders, referring to the American efforts in coordination with Kuwait to provide solutions in order to overcome the crisis.
