AU to deploy election observation mission to Egypt’s presidential election

The African Union (AU) said it would deploy a Short-Term Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) to Egypt to observe the country’s presidential election scheduled for 26-28 March 2018.

In a statement, the AU said at the invitation of the Egyptian government and National Elections Commission, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) Moussa Faki Mahamat has approved the deployment of a Short-Term Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) to Egypt.

The AUEOM, led by Abdoulaye Diop, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Mali, comprises 40 short-term observers and will be deployed from 21 March to 31 March 2018.

The mandate of the mission is to observe, assess and report on the conduct of the election in Egypt in line with African Union principles for democratic elections in Africa. The overall objective is to contribute to the deepening of democracy and democratic elections in Africa.
