Foreign Ministry regrets UNESCO's nomination of Shawkan to int'l award

Sunday، 22 April 2018 - 12:24 PM

The Foreign Ministry rejected the UNESCO's plans to bestow an international press freedom award on photojournalist Mahmoud Abu Zeid (Shawkan) who is accused of committing terror and criminal acts.

In a statement on Sunday 22/4/2018, the ministry's spokesman, Ahmed Abu Zeid, regretted UNESCO's involvement in honoring Shawkan.

He noted that Egypt's permanent delegate to UNESCO will hand over to the international organization a file containing all details concerning the accusations leveled against Shawkan.

He noted that Shawkan's nomination was motivated by some non-governmental organizations, including some dominated by Qatar which is known for its support of the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood group.

He added that politicizing UNESCO will prompt Egypt to re-assess its work at the international organization under its new chairmanship.
