Pope Tawadros: Egypt plays major role in combating terrorism

Egypt plays a major role in combating terrorism for the sake of the whole Middle East region, Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria and Patriarch of St. Mark Diocese said Wednesday.

In press statements following his arrival in Beirut, the pope hailed deeply-rooted relations between Egypt and Lebanon in all fields.

He also called for spreading the principles of reconciliation, peace and development in the Arab and Middle East regions due to their remarkable significance at the international level.

The Pope further stressed his solidarity with the victims of humanitarian crises in the Mideast region, expressing hope that Iraq and Syria would restore their peace and security soon.

Earlier in the day, Pope Tawadros arrived in Beirut to attend the annual meetings of the Orthodox churches.

During the three-day visit, Pope Tawadros will meet with Lebanese President Michel Aoun, Prime Minister Saad Hariri and Speaker of the Lebanese parliament Nabih Berri.
