Parliament Speaker Ali Abdel Aal said the parliament's approval on bills on amending some provisions of laws on foreigners' access and stay in Egypt as well as the Egyptian nationality goes in line with similar laws in several world countries.
During a general parliamentary session on Monday, he slammed the hubbub triggered by some media over amending the nationality law.
He expounded that the nationality law in Egypt was taken from the French law and the current law allows bestowing the Egyptian nationality on foreigners who stay in Egypt for a long time.
He added that granting the Egyptian nationality to any foreigner does not necessitate only meeting the set conditions in accordance with the law, but it is also bound to the executive authority's discretion.
The executive authority has the right to turn down a nationality request without giving any reason and applicant can resort to court if needed.
He noted for example that any applicant for the Egyptian nationality should not be opposing the Egyptian regime.
