On the sidelines of the Arab League Ministerial Council meeting in Cairo, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met on September 11th with the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, as they discussed means to enhance bilateral relations in all fields, and consulted on a number of regional and international issues of common interest, including developments in Palestine, Yemen and Syria.

The Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, said that during the meeting, Shoukry expressed that Egypt attaches a special interest to the brotherly and historical relations binding it with its sisterly State of Kuwait. In this context, the two Ministers reviewed a number of existing bilateral cooperation files and explored new horizons for joint cooperation.

As for coordination on regional issues, Shoukry hailed Kuwait's support for the overall Arab stances and issues against the threats facing the region, especially as Kuwait is currently a non-permanent member of the Security Council which voices the Arab position within the Council. Shoukry also expressed appreciation for Kuwait's efforts in terms of alleviating the human suffering in the various conflict areas. The two Ministers also examined means of promoting joint Arab action, confronting external interference in Arab affairs, and ways of uniting Arabs.

The meeting also dealt with the developments in the situation in Syria, as both sides stressed the centrality of the political solution and the importance of preserving the Syrian territorial integrity. In this regard, they affirmed their two countries' commitment to support the stabilization efforts in Yemen, particularly the relevant UN efforts in accordance with the international resolutions and references.

Abu Zeid added that the meeting tackled the developments in the Palestinian territories, as Shoukry stressed Egypt's unwavering stance with regard to supporting the Palestinian people’s rights. The two sides agreed to intensify consultation and coordination in the coming stage to follow up the developments of the Palestinian question, and coordinate positions at the international arena on efforts aimed at resolving the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories, as well as protecting the rights of the Palestinians.

At the international level, Abu Zeid noted that the two Ministers exchanged views on a number of international issues of common interest, especially coordinating and unifying positions within international forums, which coincides with Egypt's chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China this year, in addition to Kuwait’s non-permanent membership in the UNSC.

For his part, H.H. Sheikh Sabah expressed his country's gratitude for its historical ties with Egypt and its satisfaction with the restoration of the Egyptian regional role in supporting the settlement of a number of regional crises, which increases the efficiency of the Arab security mechanism. He underscored that Kuwait’s national security align with Egypt’s security, which is being reflected in the keenness of the Kuwaiti political leadership to provide all possible support to sisterly Egypt.
