Egypt to continue efforts to reach cooling off in Gaza Strip

Egypt stressed on Thursday that it will continue strenuous efforts to cool off conditions in the Gaza Strip following two days of fierce fighting.
Addressing a meeting by the Arab League council on the Israeli aggression on Gaza, Egypt's delegate to the Arab League Yasser el Atwi said Egypt is following up with concern what is taking place in the coastal enclave, warning of the seriousness of this volatile situation.
He called on Israel to immediately end all air raids and the use of excessive military force.
He called for avoiding any acts that jeopardize the already deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories.
He urged the international community, especially the UN and the Security Council, to shoulder their responsibilities towards the Palestinians and activate resolutions aiming at restoring Palestinians' rights.
At the end, he reiterated Egypt's commitment to all legitimate Palestinian rights.
The fighting - the most intense since the 50-day war in 2014 - erupted after Israel carried out a special undercover operation in Gaza on Sunday which left seven Hamas commanders dead.
Late on Monday, Palestinian resistance groups in Gaza launched a barrage of rockets at Israel.
In response, the Israeli army launched air raids targeting positions of Hamas and Jihad that left some Palestinians dead and many others wounded.
