Women empowerment, entrepreneurship key for Africa development

Sunday، 09 December 2018 - 01:41 PM

Director of COMESA Regional Investment Agency Heba Salama said on Sunday 9/12/2018 women empowerment and entrepreneurship are important for Africa's development and future.

Salama, speaking at the opening session of the 2018 Business for Africa Forum, reviewed successful projects carried out by young entrepreneurs last year, citing the Ghanaian startup AgroCenta that won SeedStars competition in Geneva and a Nigerian startup that won a 500,000-dollar fund to carry out its digital platform project.

These projects set good example for other entrepreneurs in the continent to follow suit, she said.

About women's empowerment, she said history is abundant with examples of successful African women who struggled for their countries' independence.

Nowadays, there are many successful women in Africa, citing the appointment of the first female governor in Egypt and the fact that 50 percent of ministerial posts in Ethiopia was given to women in the current Cabinet.

She thanked President Abdel Fattah El Sisi for sponsoring the forum for the third time, saying many ideas were floated during previous editions that were the foundations of development projects in the continent.
