World Down Syndrome day

World Down Syndrome Day is a global day that is celebrated on March 21 Annually.

On this day, people with Down syndrome, and those who live and work with them all over the world come together to organize and participate in activities and events to raise public awareness and create a single global voice to advocate for the inclusion and well-being rights of people with Down syndrome.

Many of these events are recorded on the official website of Down Syndrome International Day.

Down syndrome

Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by an additional increase in chromosome 21, which leads to intellectual disability. The cause of this phenomenon is not known yet.

 

Prevalence of morbidity

The number of people with Down syndrome is estimated at between 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 1,100 of live births worldwide.

Every year there are between 3,000 and 5,000 children are born with this genetic disorder.

It is also believed that there are about 250,000 families in the USA who have been affected by Down syndrome.

Quality of life of those who infected with Down syndrome can be improved by meeting their health-care needs, which includes conducting regular medical checks to monitor mental and physical development and providing timely intervention, in the field of physical therapy, counseling, or special education.

People with Down syndrome can also achieve an optimum quality of life through parental care, support, medical guidance and support systems in community, such as the provision of special schools for them.

All these arrangements help to involve people with Down syndrome in the community to empower them and fulfil their potential.

Ministry of Education launches a marathon for children with Down syndrome in Aswan

Ahmed Khairy, the official spokesperson  for the Ministry of Education, announced, on March 21, 2018, launching a marathon in all governorates of Egypt, as part of the ministry's celebration of the International Day of Down Syndrome Syndrome), which was launched by the Central Administration for Special Education Affairs throughout the Republic.

Khairy added that the marathon is under the direction of Dr. Tariq Shawky, Minister of Education and Technical Education, and the follow-up of Dr. Engy Mashhour, Minister advisor for Special Needs.
