Sisi directs gov't to abide by highest nuclear safety standards

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has instructed the government to abide by the highest international standards of nuclear safety and security, given the great importance of nuclear power in generating electricity in Egypt.
Sisi's directives came during a meeting on Thursday 13/02/2020 with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli, Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker and Head of the Egyptian Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA) Amgad El Wakeel, Presidential Spokesman Bassam Rady said.
During the meeting, the president was posted on the NPPA's working strategy, as well as its efforts to qualify young cadres at the new technical school for peaceful nuclear technology, the spokesman added.
The president was also briefed on the recommendations reached by the Fifth Arab Forum on the Prospects of Nuclear Power for Electricity Generation and Seawater Desalination hosted by Cairo in December 2019, the spokesman noted.
The forum called for encouraging Arab cooperation and increasing the exchange of experience in nuclear power, with a view to diversifying energy sources in Arab states.
The meeting reviewed the latest developments in the electricity system in the New Administrative Capital.
The electricity minister updated the president on the progress made in strategic projects being implemented across the nation, with the use of new and renewable energy sources, as well as the developments in electricity linkage projects with regional neighboring countries.
