Some achievements of
The Egyptian Rowing Federation

·        The Egyptian Rowing Federation was founded in 1907 as a pioneer sports federation in Egypt and joined the International Rowing Federation (FISA) in 1925. To become the 11th national rowing federation to join.
·        This federation was founded in Alexandria for 48 years and moved to Cairo in 1951.
·        In 1950, after preparing the four-boat for joining the universities Games in Budapest, Hungary, the participation of all Egyptian teams was cancelled including the rowing team for political reasons.
·        28th of December 1960 was the opening of the annual championship with Greece and the Egyptian team won this championship.
·        In 1961, the military factories started to build the frame of rowing boats of different types according to international standards.
Mr. President /Gamal AbdelNasser (President of Egypt) & Marshal/AbdelHakim Amer visited this factory on 1961, unfortunately this project stopped after that.
·        In June 1961, The 2nd Coaches Course took place in Police Rowing Club.
·        The FISA technical consultant Mr. Hanz Walter visited Egypt to give some courses on 1961. He visited also the Egyptian Rowing Club. He was received by Dr. Mostafa Khalil the Transport Minister in this time.
·        In October 1961, the Egyptian Rowing Federation Ordinary Congress was held and one of its most important recommendations was the building of a boathouse on Nozha Lake, Alexandria.
·        In November 1961, The 1st Training Camp took place in Kanater Club for the preparation in the World Championships.
·        On 28 January 1962, Mr. Meguel Lano – President of Spanish Rowing Federation visited Egypt, where Mr. Aref Fahmy & Mr. Hassan ElKordy received him.
·        The period of General Zakaria Mohye El-Din as the President of the Egyptian Rowing Federation (from 1952 to 1964) was a period of development and spreading of the sport in Egypt. Rowing competitions were introduced to universities and schools. Rowing activity was also added to Police clubs.  Also Field Marshal Abd El-Hakim Amer added this activity to army clubs.
·        Coach Meta Borantchi had a great role in the 60's in improving coaches and athletes’ level.
·        14th of November 1961, Mr. Thomas Klair – President of the international Rowing Federation – visited Egypt and was received by Mr. Zakareya Mohye El-Din, President of the Egyptian Rowing Federation.
·        In 1961, The Egyptian Rowing Federation moved to its current headquarters at 3, Shawarbi Street in downtown Cairo.
·        In December 1961, Mr. Aref Fahmy was elected as the first continental representative of Africa in the international rowing federation during the FISA Extraordinary Congress in Montreux–Switzerland.  The second person to assume this position was also an Egyptian, General Mohamed Fayez Yakan.  In 1994 this position went to Mr. Kurt Hipper from South Africa.
·        Coaches training courses were organized in cooperation with the Olympic Solidarity during the period 10 – 20 January 1986 in Egypt.
·        In 1998, Egypt took back position when Counselor Khaled Zein El-Din became representative of Africa in FASA and also a FISA Council member. Counselor Khaled Zein El-Din has retained this position until 2008.
 
 
 
·        Egypt was a country leader in the Rowing Sport Field at both African & Arab Levels.
·        The Arab Rowing Federation (FAA) was founded in Cairo on 24/3/1990 with the participation of “Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Lebanon, and Kuwait”. Egypt was chosen to be its permanent headquarter. Since 2001 till 2007 new countries became members (Morocco – Sudan – Palestine – Iraq – Qatar – UAE – Bahrain – Syria – Jordan - Libya – Somali) and the total affiliated countries become 16.
·        The African Rowing Federation was founded in Cairo on 24/12/1992 with the participation of “Egypt, Tunisia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Uganda”. Egypt was chosen to be its permanent headquarter. (Morocco – Sudan – Algeria – Kenya – Cameroon – Senegal – Nigeria – Niger – Mozambique – Swaziland – Ivory Coast – Togo – Zambia – Angola – Burkina Faso – Libya – Somali, Madgascar) and the total affiliated countries become 23.
·        Since the foundation of these 2 federations , their presidents have been Egyptians :
Arab Rowing Federation:
-Mr. Fouad Sultan (ex-Minister of Tourism) 1990-2001
-Counselor Khaled Zein ElDin (Vice-chairman of the State Lawsuits Authority) 2001-2009
          African Rowing Federation:

·        Egypt Hosted several ordinary and extraordinary congresses for:
       African Rowing Federation on 1992- 1998 – 1999 – 2004
       Arab Rowing Federation 1990 - 2001- 2003 - 2005- 2007.
 
 
·        Egypt organized several African & Arab Championships:
-         African: 1993- 1998- 2002
-         Arab: 1992- 1994- 2002- 2005
·        In 1997, Egyptian Rowing & Canoe Federation organized a Peace March and International Nile Regatta under the motto (No Terrorism).         
·        This act was in the cadre of the solidarity between the Federation and the Country to fight against terrorism.
·        During the period 1996-2000, six training centers were established over all the country to develop & promote rowing (Alexandria, Mansoura, Aswan, Ismailia, and Cairo), it increased after establishing another’s in (BanySweif – ElMenya – ElGamalia).
·        Mr. Denis Oswald – FISA President – visited Egypt during the International Nile Regatta 1997, and participated in the Masters race with Counselor Khaled Zein ElDin – President of the Egyptian Federation.
·        For the first time, Egyptian woman single sculler Doaa ElAzab was qualified for Olympic Games in  Athens 2004.
·        The first Indoor Championships ergometer was organized in Egypt on February 2002.
·        Egyptian Rowing Federation activates Master competition since 1996.
·        In December 2007, the Egyptian Rowing Federation started to develop the Adaptive Rowing, it received equipment grant from the German NOC. In addition to that a German Expert conducted training courses to prepare and identify rowers and coaches.
·        For the first time, 3 women rowers (Asmaa AbdelAziz, Ola Hashem, Heba Hassan Mostafa) beside the woman coach Rasha Ghoneim participated in the FISA Training Camp in Seville – Spain in February 2006.
·        Egypt participated in the two Training Camps in South Africa organized by FISA & Olympic Solidarity during 2006 – 2007 with 4 athletes & 2 coaches (3 men & 3 women). 
·        During the period (1907-1980), the Egyptian Rowing Federation had 25 member clubs in 3 zones, 28 coaches, 20 umpires and 1050 athletes. 
·        During the period (1984-1996), the number of registered rowers was 4099 (3975 men, 124 women)
·        During the period (1996-2007), the number of registered rowers was 9981 (6863 men, 2918 women).
·        There are now 11 active umpires who have an international license.

·        There are now 45 active national umpires (40 men – 5 women)
·        There are now 110 coaches (men and women).
·        Many Umpiring Seminars & Clinics were organized in Egypt.
·        In January 2007, a FISA umpiring exam took place in Cairo, were 4 Egyptians received the international umpiring license.
·        The first women practice rowing sport was in 50’s in Hellenic Rowing Club in Cairo.
·        The first woman to become Board Member in the Egyptian Rowing Federation was Mrs. Mervat Sadek; she was also Egypt Champion in W1x.
·        The first Egyptian woman coach Rasha Ghoneim, started her coaching career in 2003.
·        In 2001, the following women were the first to become umpires  :
Azza Zahran, Ola ElFandey, Reda Hassanein, Mallek Zahran, Abeer Elserouy, Zeinab Hamedy, Rasha Ghoneim (she left umpiring  career             to become coach)
·        The first participation  in the FISA World Rowing Forum for coaches           in 2005 – Turkey    (Rasha Ghoneim)
·        In 2006, Dr. Hussein AbdelSalam – Doaa ElAzab – Ahmed Kamel – Rasha Ghoneim participated in the FISA World Rowing Coaches Conference          in 2006 – Cyprus.
·        In 2006,Netherlands, Rasha Ghoneim participated in the FISA World Rowing Junior Coaches Conference.
·        Now, the federation has 53 member clubs in 5 zones – 29 clubs have an effective participation in the competitions.

·        Now, there are more than 100 boats of different types beside about 20 catamarans for umpiring that qualified Egypt to be able to host World Championships or World Cup events.
 
·        Egypt organized 27 times “The International Nile Regatta” starting from 1970 in which many European, African & Arab countries participated.
·        First Arab Rowing Championships was organized in Egypt on 12-1992.
·        First African Rowing Championships was organized in Egypt on 12-1993.
·        First participation of Egypt in rowing competitions in Olympic Games was in London 1948 till Tokyo 1964, than it stopped and resumed in Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, and Beijing 2008.
·        For the first time, Egyptian rowing boats were qualified to Olympic Games in  Sydney 2000 through the World Championships in St. Catherine – Canada 1999. 
·        First Egyptian participation in rowing competitions in Mediterranean Games was in Alexandria 1951 till Split 1979, than it stopped and resumed in Bari 1997, Tunisia 2001, and Almeria 2005.
·        The number of medals awarded to Egypt in World Cup events is as follows
o       Hazweinkel 1998 – Silver medal for M1x
o       Eton 2005 – Silver medal for LM2-
o       Munich 2001 – Bronze medal for M2-
o       Hazweinkel 2002 – Bronze medal for M8+
o       Poznan 2006 – Bronze medal for LM4-
·        During last 10 years, the Egyptian Federation benefit from the Olympic Solidarity programs and Grant according to annual accredited plans and programs.
·        Since 1999, Egypt has 3 votes in FISA Congress due to numerous and different participations in the International Rowing Federation’s activities.
·        Egyptian Rowing Federation was honored by 3 Sport Ministers (Dr. Aly ElDinHelal – Mr. Anas ElFeky – Dr. Mamdouh ElBeltagy) for its achievements during years 2001- 2004 – 2005.
·        In 2002, Mr. Salem Mashhour received Letter of Congratulation from the Olympic Committee for Fair Play.
·        In 2001, Counselor Khaled Zein ElDin received Certificate from IOC for his Volunteers role in developing Sport, Olympic Movement & the fraternity among peoples.
·        In 2005, Counselor Khaled Zein ElDin received the Sport & Fair Play trophy from IOC.
·        In 2006, Counselor Khaled Zein ElDin received the trophy of Merit from ACNO.
·        In 2007, Egyptian Rowing & Canoe Federation got new headquarters at the Sports Federations Complex.
 
 
·        Counselor Khaled Zein ElDin – President of Egyptian Rowing Federation was Chef de Mission for several Egyptian Sportive  Delegations abroad:
o       World Rowing Championships & World Cup since 1997 - 2007
o       Youth Olympic Games – Moscow 1998
o       Mediterranean Games – Tunis 2001
o       Olympic Games – Athens 2004 during which Egypt won 5 medals after stopping from winning gold medals for fifty six years, he was honored by H.E. Mr. President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak.
o       Mediterranean Games – Almeria 2005 during which Egypt won 43 different medals after 46 years of stooping from winning this number of medals in the Mediterranean Games History.
o       Several Egyptian Rowing Delegations. 
·        For the first time, President of Egyptian Rowing Federation became the Secretary General of Egypt National Olympic Committee –              Counselor Khaled Zein ElDin.
·        The 1st international regatta course for rowing & canoeing was constructed in Egypt in 2007 in Nozha Lake according to international standards and under the FISA supervision (where were installed: Albano system, Launching pontoons, Start pontoons, grandstand, boathouse, 3 controlling huts in the water).  The project includes the paving, lighting and planting  for the distance of 2500m. Project was furnished by TV catamaran for the first time in Africa & Arab Countries … This project is considered as a big step that will contribute to the development of rowing, not only in Egypt but also in Africa and Arab countries. The course will enable Egypt to host World Cup or World Championship events. Now we are working on the rest of construction in the" Mubarak International Regatta Course".
·        The new international course –  "Mubarak International Regatta Course" hosted the rowing competitions of the 11th All Arab Games, organized by Egypt in November 2007.
·        Rowing is a team sport that depends on discipline, endurance, persistence and the spirit of cooperation.
A Swiss researcher once noted the influence of rowing sport on the individual, and found that almost all rowers in Egypt and all over the world have achieved high positions or great achievements in their professional career, rowing is a sport for all.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Memorandum of Understanding
 
 
 
Between the undersigned:
 
        The International Federation of Egypt for Rowing Clubs, Alexandria, represented by the Federation President Mr. Georges ROUSSOS (Egyptian Rowing Federation)
And, The International Federation for Egyptian Sportive Clubs, in Alexandria represented by the President Mr. A. Ch. BOLANACHI (Egyptian Olympic Committee).
 
 
 
Attribution of the sportive authority in Egypt
 
 
1st article
The undersigned parties agree to divide the responsibilities as follows:
The International Federation of Egypt for Rowing Clubs supervises the rowing sport and The International Federation for Egyptian Sportive Clubs supervises the rest of sports in Egypt. So, each of the undersigned parties keeps its right of management on both amateur and professional levels of the mentioned sports.
2nd article
The undersigned federations, which as yet do not have the same definition for amateur status, agree on:
The amateur and professional qualification by one of the federations, gives the same rights through the other federation.
Any penalty issued by one of the federations is approved by the other one.
3rd article
Only the federation that issued the penalty has the right to modify or cancel it.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
4th article
The International Federation of Egypt for Rowing Clubs is not responsible for the organization of any championship or official race except for rowing; also The International Federation for Egyptian Sportive Clubs is not responsible for the organization of official rowing championships or races.
Each federation retains the right to organize competitions in any sports activity without further exchange with the other federation on condition that such an event has a special character, and is exclusive to the members of the clubs affiliated to the organizing federation.  Such competitions will not represent any official championship and will be held for the sole purpose of enhancing sports programs.
