Political relations
France enjoys a positive image in Egypt. A rich and balanced relationship exists between the two countries, based to a large extent on the merits of political dialogue. Bilateral relations are marked by the substantial convergence of political views, the deep anchoring in Egypt of French cultural presence, which has grown and been enhanced (opening of the French University in Egypt in 2002), and significant economic ties. France's military cooperation remains relatively modest.
Beyond Napoleon’s expedition, perceived by Egyptians as a colonial adventure as well as the start of Egypt’s “awakening”, Egyptians refer more readily to the extremely close ties that prevailed between the two countries throughout the nineteenth century, and to French contribution to Egypt’s modernization and development.
Joint political actions, which are increasing, have been established on the basis of broad similarity of approaches.
During his tenure,of the former President Hosni Mubarak visited France roughly 50 times. His relations with former French President François Mitterrand and incumbent President Jacques Chirac have been most friendly.
