Sustaniable Development

Sustainable development is a pattern of resource use that aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but in the indefinite future.

Sustainable development entails the integration of economic, social and environmental objectives, to produce development that is socially desirable, economically viable and ecologically sustainable.

There are obstacles to achieving sustainable development, the most prominent being combating poverty by introducing balanced production/consumption patterns.

Following is a review of the objectives of sustainable development in relation to: Water The objectives are a) economically to ensure sufficient supply of water used for agricultural, industrial, urban and rural development purposes; b) socially to guarantee that enough water is provided for use by households, small plantations and the poor majority and c) ecologically to increase the use-efficiency of water in agricultural, industrial, urban and rural development and protect subterranean and potable waters and their eco-systems.

Food

The objectives are


a) economically to raise agricultural productivity in order to achieve food sufficiency and increase exports;


b) socially to raise the profitability of small plantations and


c) ecologically to protect agricultural land, forests, water, wildlife, fish and water resources.

Health

The objectives are


a) economically to raise agricultural productivity through health care, preventive medicine and greater safety regulations in work places;


b) socially to raise the bar for high-quality water, air and the surrounding space and


c) ecologically to protect life-supporting biological and ecological systems.

Shelter and services


The objectives are

a) economically to guarantee a sufficient supply of building materials and increase the efficiency of the transportation network;


b) socially to provide adequate housing, sanitary drainage and means of transportation at suitable prices for the poor majority and


c) ecologically to guarantee the optimal use of lands, forests and energy sources.

Income


The objectives are


a) economically to raise economic efficiency, increase growth and generate a greater number of jobs in the government and public sectors;


b) socially to support small enterprises and provide employment in the private sector for the poor majority and


c) ecologically to guarantee the sustainable development of the natural resources needed for economic growth in both the public and private sectors.
