Shams was an outstanding weightlifter and a gold medalist in the 1948 London Olympics. He also won a bronze medal in the Berlin Olympics in 1936.

Shams was four-time winner of the World Weightlifting Championship the last of which was that held in Milan, Italy in 1951.

Shams died in January 2001.
