Born in 1916, al-Tuni was always a sports-lover. He won numerous international weightlifting championships in the period from 1936 to 1951. In 1935, he set a new world record in the press lift (eliminated since 1972). He was champion of the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where he set another record which earned him world respect and the congratulations of then German leader Adolf Hitler. Al-Tuni was also part of the Egyptian team that won the World Weightlifting Championship in 1949.
