Alfred Farag
(1929-2005)
Alfred Farag is one of the most important Arab playwrights in the twentieth century. Born in al-Sharqiya governorate in 1929, Farag obtained his bachelor degree in arts from Faculty of Arts, Alexandria University in 1949. Farag's plays seriously discuss justice, freedom, social solidarity, national identity, and the search for truth, besides calling for creating an effective and strong will inside anyone to be able to change and renew things.
Alfred Farag adored theater while he was young; he was a member in the acting team in school. He also composed poems and practised drawing.
After graduation, he worked as a journalist and literary critic in Rosa al-Yousif magazine, Tahrir magazine and Al-Gomhuria newspaper. From 1964 to 1966, he turned his attention to the stage where he wrote a number of plays that really affected the theater movement in Egypt. He worked as a counselor ot Theater, Music and Folklore Authority.
His works included:
1- Baghdad Barber, 1964.
2- Suleiman Al-Halabi, 1965.
3- Al-Zeir Salim, 1966.
Alfred Farag died on December 4, 2005.
