Place of birth Karem Mahmoud's strong sharp voice earned him a distinguished place amongst the singers of his time. Known in his youth for his sweet voice, he moved from his birth town in 1938 to Cairo to enroll in the Oriental Music Institute from which he graduated in 1944. His mentor at the time was Mustafa Reda, Head of the Institute, who urged him to join the Golden Tunes Troupe. He sang a great deal of songs in praise of Egypt. Of these was "Mahlaha al-Donya", which was the first Egyptian song to which the science of harmony would apply. His success with the Golden Tunes provided him with an opening in the Egyptian Radio. His strong voice was the reason why he was cast for the lead in a number of operettas by composer Sayed Darwish and lyricist Mohammad Taymur (Al-Ashrah Al-Tayeba) and composer Ahmad Sidqi and lyricist Beiram al-Tunsi (Alf Layla Wa Layla).
