(1899-1963) Muhammad Hassan Al Shugaa’e was born in September 1899 in the village of “Meit Abul Ghar” in Al-Gharbia governorate to a poor family. He loved music and when his father died, one of his relatives sent him to the technical institute in Tanta where he learnt how to play Cornet. At the age of 16, he was chosen to join the royal guard of Sultan Hussein Kamel where he became acquainted with music at the hands of an Italian musician . In 1934, Shugaa’e moved to Cairo where he formed his own band for playing music on the radio every week. He worked in the Ministry of Education from 1939 to 1954, then he was chosen to assume the post of the chairman of the Music Department in the Ministry of Social Affairs . Shugaa’e started composing music for some films and TV films among which was the movie of “Aida”, starring Umm Kulthoum and Ibrahim Hamouda. He also taught music in the Higher Institute for Theatre Arts.
Shugaa’e died in June 1963.
