Tourism has always been a major contributor to Egyptian economic growth and overall societal development. It also enhances cultural exchange and mutual understanding with people belonging to other cultures. The number of tourists traveling to had gone close to 11 million tourists in the year 2007, mainly to witness the richness of culture and civilization that dates back more than 7500 years in history.
The Egyptian Embassy in Tokyo and its Tourism Promotion Office, Egypt Air and Misr Travel are cooperating with various Japanese entities such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Land, Transportation, Infrastructure and Tourism of Japan, as well as the Japanese Tourism Agency, in addition to JATA (Japanese Association of Travel Agencies) and other relevant actors in order to increase the number of Japanese tourists travelling to Egypt.
The year 2009 witnessed the Year of Egypt Tourism Promotion in Japan. Among various cultural activities, Egypt was the guest of honor at Tokyo International Book Fair (July 2009) as well as Tokyo International Film Festival (October 2009).
